These posts are excerpts from a powerpoint presentation that was created and shown at the 2004 CHD Awareness Quilt Show in Towson, Maryland.

If you would like a PDF version of the entire presentation, please email me at:

Since its meager beginnings in April 2000, the Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) Awareness Quilt Project has grown to include more than twelve hundred heart blocks from all 50 states and more than twenty countries worldwide!

The quilts are constructed of heart blocks. Some of the heart blocks have angel themes.
These are in memory of someone who lost their battle with chd. Some of the heart blocks are purple. These honor those who were born with a chd and went on to have a heart transplant.

This amazing project is a series of queen-sized quilts. Each quilt honors 42 CHDers. Each quilt is constructed of heart blocks.

What goes into the making of the CHD Quilt Project

“..If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain…”
Emily Dickinson

What started as one woman’s dream has become a breathtaking reality!

The dream has become a reality through the dedication and commitment of a network of volunteers worldwide

Spotlighting the CHD Awareness Quilts

Since the very first quilt block was stitched in my living room, we have diligently worked to attain our goal of passionately promoting chd awareness. This adventure has led us to be the "keepers" of this fantastic quilt project.

Each queen-sized quilt holds 42 heart blocks. Each heart block honors someone who was born with a congenital heart defect.

Over the next few weeks, we will be spotlighting each quilt along with stories of those who are honored on each quilt.

If you would like to be part of this fantastic journey, please email me ( chdquiltproject@aol.com ) with your story as well as the "location" of your block on the CHD Quilt Project.

If you need to find your block visit the Quilt Block Status page at: http://www.geocities.com/parquilter/chdblock.html

If you have questions regarding the status of your block, please email Nancy and JD parquilter@comcast.net .

Bookmark this page and come back often to read the heart-warming and touching stories of chder's and their families!

Pictures from CHD Families Association

Spotlight on CHD Awareness

In an effort to promote greater public awareness of congenital heart defects, many families turn to local support groups. One such support group was founded by two families in the greater Kansas City area.
The Congenital Heart Defects Families Association is a Kansas City area not-for-profit corporation working to bring comfort and support to area families affected by congenital heart defects. Support groups, distribution of educational literature, meals, care packages and comfort items for children undergoing cardiac procedures are the Association's main focus. Additionally, the Association diligently works to raise funds and awareness to promote congenital heart defects research through a variety of projects. One hundred percent volunteer run, the CHD Families Association strives to maximize investment in its work, not its overhead. We are the only support system in the Kansas City area for children with heart defects and their families. The association displays 3 quilts from the CHD Quilt project each year at their annual picnic and at the American Heart Association’s annual Heartwalk.

For more information visit their website at:

For contact information visit the CHD FAMILIES websit or contact

Spotlight on CHD Information and Resources for the CHD community

When a family first receives a diagnosis of chd, they can feel numb. They want answers! Searching the internet can often be a daunting and time consuming task. There are several websites out there that provide an excellent base to start your research. One such website is:

If you are looking for definitions of medical terms, this site provides an excellent source of chd diagnosis. There is a wealth of information here including links to support groups, articles about CHD and resources for the CHD community.

Congenital Heart Defects . com is sponsored by Baby Hearts Press.
If you have a Support group or Resource Page you would like spotlighted on the CHD Awareness Quilt Blog, please contact the project at: chdquiltproject@aol.com

Please note: We do not provide medical advice, but we do have information which can supplement what doctors and other professionals provide.

The CHD Awareness Quilt Project's AED Program

The CHD Awareness Quilt Project's main mission is to promote greater public awareness of congenital heart defects.

For several years now, Cathy Schweinberg and her wonderful family have been raising money for the CHD Awareness Quilt Project by holding a golf classic in memory of their son, Jason who lost his battle with chd at the tender age of 17. http://memorialclassic.homestead.com/

One of the programs that benefits from the hardwork and dedication of the Schweinberg family is the AED Program. So far the CHD Awareness Quilt Project has been able to donate eight AEDs to schools.
If you would like more details regarding the CHD Awareness' AED Program, please contact Cathy Schweinberg at CSchweinberg@aol.com

What is The CHD Awareness Quilt Project?

Hello all! The photo you see is the first quilt in the series of queen-sized quilts (50 so far!) created and dedicated to all those born with a congenital heart defect.

Each quilt has 42 heart blocks. Each block is lovingly created to honor a chder and to passionately promote greater public awareness of congenital heart defects.

Each year, all the quilts come together in one place for one fantastic and emotional quilt show.

Throughout the year, individual quilts are displayed throughout the country at chd awareness raising events.

If you are interested in hosting an event, contact me at chdquiltproject@aol.com.
